The game was first released on August 11th, 2022, and has been expanded into five main parts, with the latest chapter launching at the end of 2025. Unlike many horror games that rely on jump scares, The Backrooms is a survival-management simulator wrapped in dread. Always maintain your stamina and a clear head to survive until the end of the game.
A tall, black, and very slim creature with a wire-like frame. It will stand right next to you after 3 minutes of the game. Shake it off by running away and turning as many corners as possible. Its speed is equal to yours, so walking in a zigzag pattern is what you should do to get through.
Press the C key to pull out your ID card to identify other players; otherwise, you might run into someone with gray skin and sunken eyes. No one else but the Skin-Stealer. It may have already "stolen" someone else's skin to trick you. This creature always keeps its flashlight on. At level 5, you need to pay attention to corners before entering the hallway; keeping the door open helps you retreat easily in case of emergency. When you see a Skin-Stealer inside, close the door immediately to trap it. If you can't close it in time, hide in a closet or under a bed. Level 8 requires you to move cautiously. If playing with teammates, turn off all flashlights together to avoid the Skin-Stealer blending into your group, because its characteristic is that it always keeps its flashlight on when disguised.
They are faster than you think. These are spider-like creatures with black skin and white eyes and smiles. Smilers shatter lighting fixtures wherever they go. As long as you go to a place with light, you are safe. They will appear at level 1. You should not be slow when entering the room after the lights go out; move rapidly and go from room to adjacent room. Don't go to a distant room, as the lights will go out before you arrive, putting you at risk. There will be laughing sounds from Smilers repeating at level 2; you need to run before you hear them.
They walk on four legs like dogs, wear human skin, and have pale, black eyes and sharp teeth. They are faster than you, but a flashlight will blind them for a few seconds. Blind them three times, and they will become tired of you and run away. If being chased, quickly run into a room and close the door immediately. Step backward when you hear growling around you; they are often near circuit breakers. Be careful when approaching them; retreat immediately after triggering the breaker.
Tall humanoid figures with leathery yellow skin, holding red balloons—that is their characteristic. Lower your head and crouch under a table to avoid attracting their attention. Popping a balloon will trigger their attention, and you will face death.
You will see them on level 5 and briefly on level 9. They are gray and fly in clusters; they stand still scattered throughout the floor. Our goal is to eliminate them using Bug Spray, after which you will obtain the key and escape level 5. Use the food service elevator to move upward; you can eat to increase your strength and maintain stamina.
Their characteristics are similar to male deathmoths but they are larger in size. They will not chase you unless they hear your running footsteps or you shine a flashlight on them. Do not hold a flashlight or make footstep sounds. If you spot or hear strange noises, run to the nearest valve and open it.
A gray, skinny entity with glowing red eyes. It is blind but extremely sensitive to sound. The Scratcher will become aggressive and chase you if you happen to make a noise. Any noise: walking, running, picking up tapes, even proximity voice chat—it investigates everything. If it chases you, crouch down and hide under a table in a room, then find the fire alarm. The ringing alarm will distract the Scratcher; the sound drives it crazy.
What to avoid: Do not let your sanity drain passively while you explore. If you are in a level that depletes sanity (most of them do), keep moving toward the exit. Every extra minute is a risk.
