Escape the Stranger’s Basement is a 3D point-and-click escape puzzle game, playable directly in your browser, developed by Melting-Mindz's Selfdefiant. You wake up on a mattress in a strange basement. The door on the stairs is locked with a chain on your side. This is part one of five parts. Many people search every corner and get stuck. The more important question is what in the basement is out of power, and when should you restore it?
Why Do All Clues in Escape the Stranger’s Basement Lead to the Circuit Breaker?
The chain of clues begins under the blanket. A Polaroid points to a jar, which hides a small key that opens the circuit breaker. It's a gray box next to the chain door with five switches, two labeled BENCH and FREEZER. This panel determines what in the basement has power. Opening it early helps you control the pace of the game, instead of being faced with useless items without knowing why.
Is an Empty Freezer a Dead End?
The first time you open it, the freezer is empty because it's off. The cold will change what's inside, so don't cross it off the list. Come back after you turn on the freezer.
The radio follows the same logic. It lacks a tuning knob. Only when the knob is in the correct position, and the workbench is powered on, can you tune into the station someone circled with a pencil. The small light turning green means you've found the right station. The voice on the radio explains how to enter the code for the chain door, so listen to the whole thing. Press the speaker if you need to listen again.

When Should You Turn Off the Lights Instead of Turning Them On?
The red toolbox on the workbench has three numbered knobs. The numbers are painted in a place only visible when the lights are off. The paint doesn't fade, so if you miss a number, just change the light state again. This is where newcomers easily get lost, because everyone wants to turn on the lights to see better.
The simplest sequence I've found:
- Take the key from the jar, open the circuit breaker before doing anything else.
- Power on the bench and then tune into the radio.
- Turn on the FREEZER and return to the freezer.
- Turn off the lights when handling the red toolbox.
Is the Hint Button Worth Using?
Yes, and it's quite pleasant to use. This button checks where you're stuck. The first press points to the correct object; subsequent presses are more specific. The clock runs continuously, and the final screen displays a time next to your record, so following the chain of clues is more effective than randomly searching. The game saves after a few seconds; refreshing the page only shows the Continue button.
In Escape the Stranger’s Basement, knowing whether the basement has power or not is half the battle won. If you'd like to try another escape game, check out Cheese Escape, the new hot game on granny1.io.
